From Olympian to Acupuncturist
BSc acupuncture student Sandra Wright shares with us her journey from winning medals to treating patients.
I’m Sandra who trained in late life to fulfil a childhood dream. I’m actually 1 of 8 kids originally from North Manchester. From Olympic athlete, to Police Officer to Physio I bring my life skills to help people make a change.
I have been interested the body and movement from being a competitive athlete in my early years and managing to represent Great Britain at Barcelona Olympics 1992 in the 400m and 4x400m relay, I returned with a medal after winning bronze in the relay final.

I fell into the police service (its another story) in 1991 and competed in the Olympics in 1992. I didn’t really get the support from the police required to still train and compete! I was already paying a mortgage so sadly hung up my spikes after Commonwealth games in 1994.
My police journey continues from department to department with little satisfaction. This is when my thirst of knowledge began. I became a knowledge addict! Name a course I have probably done it.
I had acupuncture as an athlete but it didn’t grab my interest until as a Physiotherapist I did my CPD’s in Acupuncture with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapist and as a Specialised Women’s Health Physio I did a CPD in Acupuncture for Women’s Health conditions.
I was truly in love! ❤️ I wanted to know and understand more about Acupuncture I wanted to start my 3rd degree. This is when my journey began with the NCA. I loved the vibe and feel of the college and its location in York was dreamy!

I love the amazing workings of the body. One of the essential skills I think you need as a therapist is listening, really listening to what the patient is telling you. It allows for a much better connection with the patient and the ability to really get to the real root of the problem. I am also someone that thrives on learning, so need constant education, always looking for new ways to treat issues and achieve the best results. However I do believe I am a course addict! I love to have different things in my tool bag.
When not in clinic my new passion is powerlifting and would love to represent GB in my age group. No pressure on myself then!
We’re sure you will Sandra and wish you all the best in competing and of course the rest of your acupuncture studies.
